Photography
In my developing career as a writer, I started taking photographs for some of my articles, initially on a little digital point-and-shoot. Most of the photos that I took at first were snapshots of sound crews, though I occasionally did a concert shot. My skills were limited, but over time, I learned more about photography and how to manually get the best shots to stop action and control depth of field, as well as for how to get the best white balance.
During my first year working for US College Hockey Online, I took an SLR out for a few games and experimented. I found I enjoyed shooting more and more, and photography has now become something I am pursuing. I primarily shoot concerts and sports, though I might diversify that as time goes on.
So far, I have used an Olympus E-3 and a Nikon D-3. I currently prefer the Nikon, both for its full frame sensor and its noise-free shooting at high ISOs, a crucial component of concert photography.
Here is a Pictorial on the Frozen Four Skills Competition, 4/11/08, that I did for US College Hockey Online. I've also been shooting a lot of concerts for the Denver Post Reverb section, and have a Flickr account. My Flickr page has a lot of albums with my work, so check it out!
